The Best Meatless Frozen Burritos, From Breakfast Scramble to Rice and Beans

Sometimes, only convenient, freezer food will do, and arguably, nothing beats a burrito. Here are some of our favorite vegan options for when time is short but we want a really satisfying meal.

Americans really love burritos. In fact, one recent survey found that more than half of people in the US would take a burrito over a romantic date. It’s not hard to understand why: burritos are satisfying, customizable, comforting, packed with flavor, and unlike a romantic partner, there is no real risk of them breaking your heart.

While preparing burritos from scratch is hard to beat, sometimes, we only have the energy or motivation to simply walk to the freezer and heat one up in the microwave. If you love a frozen burrito, here are some of our go-to vegan options.

JUMP TO THE BURRITOS

How do you cook a frozen burrito?

Frozen burritos were first invented in the 1950s, and they were an immediate hit with the American public due to their convenience.

“Our burritos were very tasty, portion-controlled, easy to handle,” Duane R. Roberts, the creator of the frozen burrito, told food journalist and author Gustavo Arellano. “You didn’t have to worry about spoiled food—they had a long shelf life, and you bring them out when you’re ready to make them.”

Cooking a frozen burrito is simple. While timings and temperature settings can vary, it usually involves putting the burrito in the oven to cook for around 20 to 30 minutes. Microwaving is another option, and this usually takes just under five minutes, depending on the burrito.

What to eat with frozen burritos?

Roberts may have created mass-produced frozen burritos, but, of course, he didn’t invent the burrito itself. Burritos come from Mexico, where they likely originated in Sonora, a northwest region of the country.

You can easily pair your frozen burritos with dips and sauces you’d normally find in Mexican restaurants such as guacamole and salsa. Most storebought options will be vegan. Alternatively, you could whip up your own. We love this recipe for vegan pepita-chili seed dipping sauce and this guacamole with pomegranate and cacao.

2 Eat Just

Eat Just is best known for its pourable liquid vegan egg, but the brand also makes delicious vegan frozen burritos. It offers heat-and-eat wraps in three flavors: Chili Crisp, Southwest, and Skillet. Asian-inspired Chili Crisp combines shiitake mushrooms, edamame, and chili crisp sauce. Southwest comes packed with rice, beans, peppers, and chipotle sauce, while the latter is all about vegetables, with mushrooms, broccoli, potatoes, and dill. All three varieties contain Just Egg (of course), and they’re equally flavor-packed and tasty.
