More than 1,300 cases of Miyoko’s vegan butter have been recalled after being distributed to stores in 10 states.
The recall concerns Miyoko’s Creamery European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter with UPC 857554005773 and retail carton lot code 07871. According to the FDA, the product may be contaminated with yeast, mold, and E. coli.
Prosperity Organic Foods initiated the recall on September 11, 2026, and the FDA classified it as Class II on October 23.
A Class II recall means that use of or exposure to a product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
This differs from the more serious Class I category, which indicates a “reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The affected butter was distributed in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Wisconsin. It carries a best-by date of November 5, 2026.
Miyoko’s Creamery
Why are recalls on the rise?
The recall follows a tumultuous period for Miyoko’s Creamery, which was acquired by Prosperity Organic Foods in late 2025 following a battle for ownership involving founder Miyoko Schinner.
The brand isn’t alone. The number of food recalls has been rising lately, which may partly reflect improvements in food safety monitoring.
“Recalls are a normal part of a food-safety system that is actively looking for problems,” Wade Syers, a food safety specialist with Michigan State University Extension, told MSU Today.
“What people often don’t see is that many recalls are initiated voluntarily by companies after testing identifies a potential issue before widespread illness occurs.”
He added: “In some cases, contamination that may have gone undetected years ago can now be identified and investigated much more quickly.”
At the time of writing, it was not clear whether any illnesses had been reported. Some E. coli infections are mild, but others can lead to serious complications, including hemolytic uremic syndrome or sepsis.
A recall notice from New Seasons Market advises that anyone who has already purchased the affected Miyoko’s butter should not consume it and should contact the store about a refund.
